My personal "Amazing Race"

After school, I got in the car with Jarka who had to go to a dentist appointment and take care of some things.  She dropped me at the corner of the metro station and said she would meet me at half past six at the pony tail.
I asked for a little more information about the "pony tail" and she said it was at the museum stop on the metro, actually a very significant place in Czech history.  Well as soon as she said it's easy to find because it's in Wenceslas Square, I panicked internally -- thinking nooooooo - Sarah and I searched for Wenceslas Square for hours . . .
I didn't have too much time to worry, because I needed to figure out how to get back to the hotel.

As I walked down into the metro station, it took me 5 minutes to realize I couldn't use the machines to purchase a ticket.  I wandered around until I found a ticket booth where I purchased a 72 hour all access ticket.

I attempted to follow the metro to the trolly to the bus (Jarka wrote out the directions, gave me a map, told me ten times) -- but . . . you guessed it  . . . I got a bit mixed up.  Ended up in a lovely park as I talked with Dave -- I thought I would look for the hotel with the red roof -- right, every roof is red.  I asked a couple shop owners, who pretended not to understand me.  I remember that Mary suggested I ask young people for directions, since they typically speak English and that worked very well.  One very nice young lady was helpful in the metro, to the extent of running over to grab me before I got on the wrong train.  Another young man explained how the system worked.  It was even more challenging because stops were changed due to the Chinese Presidential visit.
It truly was a beautiful day and I was able to get some fresh air and some exercise.  Here's a smidgen of my attempt to find my way back to the hotel.  Dave recommended using google maps, which was ultimately how I found my way back both this afternoon and this evening.

It really was a beautiful day.

What, there are two 1st floors ?

View from my room (Floor 1 of 1st floor - ha)
I'm quite aware of my direction issues (up/down; north/south) so you may not find it hard to believe I had a little trouble finding my way down to breakfast this morning . . . thinking I'll be okay once I eat something.  Very nice buffet, I had eggs, black tea, yogurt & muesli,  cheese and turkey and fruit.  Sounds like a "huge" breakfast, but I had a few bites of everything. .. Felt pretty good, set up a taxi for 9:30 to take me to the school, since the metro system is partially shut down due to a visit from the president of China.

Jarka told that it is even more safe because of all the security for his visit and her school has so many children of dignitaries that it is also secure.  Interesting that I'm not concerned about safety here in Prague.  Must be on everyone's mind.

Well, back to my original story . . . after a lovely breakfast and feeling much more like myself.  I confidently took the elevator (yes) to the 1st floor -- after wandering aimless around from one end to the other thinking, how can I not find room 104, I shamelessly had to return to the front desk to ask how to find my room - -  apparently there are two 1st floors -- who knew?  Now I don't feel so ridiculous, although I don't think I'm helping with the general reputation of American tourists.

Jarka met me at the hotel last night.  I can't believe she waited for me.  She had a very traditional, thoughtful gift and Easter candy.  I was very happy to see her.  She let me borrow her map as she circled and wrote down all the public transportation.  She is so kind -- she figured it all out for me.
Unfortunately, I was told some of the lines were closed today due to the Chinese Presidential visit, so I'll be taking a taxi from the hotel.  I feel a bit guilty after she took the time to put all of the directions together for me.  I'll have to give it a try tomorrow.

Well I'm off to the school!  Very excited to see everything!  Sounds like we have a busy day set up . . . so I'll check-in later . . .

Dangerous airport for the wallet

Turns out being stuck at the Heathrow airport isn't too bad. Shops with all kinds of interesting things to see.
Thank you Dave for giving me the charger adapter box, but in order to save lbs in my suitcase I took the one I thought I needed-- turns out I was wrong.
The airport is packed due to many weather delays and I found an open charger at the station.  I was quite entertaining trying to plug in the Czech adapter. First I had to politely excuse myself as I awkwardly climbed over a bench and someone's luggage to reach the outlet, only to discover it didn't fit in England. I miss my sane travel buddies!

I now have another UK charger. 8 US dollars.

The flight really was that bad ....

Turns out there was a major storm in England this morning. As I sit in the airport waiting for my flight to Prague I found this article:

Round Robin . . . .

British Airways and American don't play well together.  I've been their little ping pong ball dragging my 50lb bag from one counter to the other.

American Airlines has what I refer to as a "kiosk chaos" check-in area.  (only 50% of them are working).  As I was attempting to check-in, which I had already done online (you may be wondering why I'm checking in at the kiosk when I've already checked-in online -- they want you to print out your baggage tag - so there really isn't any point in going prepared) -- the "machine" assigned me to a different seat than the one I paid extra for online.  After waving my arms like a fool to get the attention of someone in "red jacket", I was advised to "just print it out and bring both".  Oh, I miss have cute young Sarah along -- we never have problems getting someone to assist.

American Airlines is doing their best to remove the expense of employees from their balance sheets to the determent of many frazzled customers.
Funny story . . . as I was waiting in yet another line at American Airlines - I was complimented by someone from another country waiting in line next to me on my English :) -- ha!

TSA Pre select !!!!!  LOVE IT -- It was exceptional when I had to go through security at JFK.  There was a crowd and line well beyond the roped off areas.  I excused myself and walked through Pre TSA without having to taking anything out of my bags or remove shoes!  Dave than you!  It was certainly worth the wait at the Peace Bridge.  I'll be curious to see how the global part works coming home.
I did ask at Heathrow if my USA TSA Pre select worked for their line with a smile -- no way!

The plane was nice, clean and I was in an emergency exit row, which I think the flight person  questioned my abilities after I couldn't close the overhead.

Easy flight UNTIL we arrived at Heathrow.  I had to ask for a bag because my breakfast was ready to exit!  Fortunately, I was able to keep it down.  The first attempt to land was pretty scary, very turbulent and a quick acceleration toward the sky.  We flew around for a bit, then the pilot tried again.  I thought I was really going to lose it this time.  One of the flight attendants came running through the aisle with two trash bags exclaiming about all the people getting sick in the plane.

After the poor pilot figured out what to do, we already knew where we were going because of the flight map.  Off to Manchester because he was running out of fuel and couldn't circle until the wind died down.

We sat on the runway in the plane while it was refueled and who knows what else.  Most people were just sleeping.
I'm now at Heathrow, missed my connection -- we actually landed in Manchester, when I should have landed in Prague.
I went to the BA counter as instructed by AA; they said I needed to go to AA!!!!  I was almost in tears, I think she felt sorry for me and took care of rebooking me.
I've been in touch with Jarka -- I'll miss the concert she has planned :( --but there is plenty to do here at the airport.
Signing off for now . . .
